Manufactured Gas Storage Sites

Manufactured Gas Plant Sites (MGP) produced gas for lighting and heating as well as by products which were used as fuel or feedstocks for the production of chemicals.  Though MGP facilities have long been decommissioned, the sites upon which they stood remain as a contamination legacy. 

The three principal MGP processes were coal carbonization, water gas (or carburated water gas) and oil gas.  The primary feedstocks and by-product residuals that were generated from the above processes are:

  • Gas production and heat recovery;
  • Gas cleanup;
  • Tar/oil/water seperation;
  • Tar and hydrocarbon processing; and
  • Wastewater treatment.

The six major classes of chemical constituents typically present at MGP sites are as follows.  Please note, these constituents are present as a management of the organic and inorganic residuals involved in the previously listed processes (air emissions and wastewater discharges did not significantly contribute to any contamination that may exist today).:

  • Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs);
  • Light (volatile) Armomatics;
  • Phenolics;
  • Inorganic Nitrogen;
  • Inorganic Sulfur; and
  • Selected Metals
