Every contaminated site has its own unique issues that need to be addressed successfully. Remote and iscolated sites have additional challenges. Stakeholders need to be aware that additional costs may be associated with these remote and iscolated challenges as follows:
- Mobilisation of plant – additional costs are associated with getting the gear required for a project on site. It should be noted that some plant may need to travel on permitted roads which will require escorts or restricted hours of travel.
- Mobilisation of project manager – usually located within metropolitan and regional areas, the nature of remote and iscolated sites mean that it will take more time and additional disbursements to get the project manager to the site.
- Plant Rates – plant rates are approximately 15% more expensive than metropolitan rates. The disadvantage is obviously monetry, the advantages though are usually you can hire all the non specialised plant (excavator, trucks, water cart, compactors) locally accompanied with local knowledge and a can do attitude .
- Imported Fill – fill material imported onto site has the additional transportation costs associated with getting the material from the source to the site.
- Skilled Personnel – sometimes key field personnel may need to be sourced from outside the local area due to the specialised nature of the project
- Offsite Disposal – Similarly to importing fill, offsite disposal of contaminated material has the additional cost of transportation from the site to the waste disposal facility. Unlike importing fill material from numerous potential sources, there may be only one location where contaminated fill may be disposed offsite to that meet legislative requirements (appropriately licensed landfill facility).
